Frequently asked questions
Everything you've wondered about lemon myrtle, citral and our certified organic range, answered.
What is lemon myrtle?
Lemon myrtle (Backhousia citriodora) is a rainforest tree native to Queensland, Australia. Its leaves carry the highest natural concentration of citral of any plant on Earth, around 95 to 98 percent, which gives it powerful antibacterial, antiviral and antimicrobial properties along with its famous fresh lemon scent.
What makes citral special?
Citral is the naturally occurring compound behind lemon myrtle's antiseptic strength and citrus aroma. Lemon myrtle contains around 95 to 98 percent citral, compared with about 7 percent in a lemon. Unlike citrus, it's non-acidic, so it's gentler on skin and surfaces.
Are your products really organic?
Yes. Our lemon myrtle is sourced sustainably and ethically from Australian growers, and our certified organic lines, including our teas, balms and oil, are made without harsh chemicals in small handcrafted batches at our workshop in Gympie, Queensland.
Does lemon myrtle repel insects?
Yes, lemon myrtle is a traditional and effective natural insect repellent. Aboriginal peoples crushed the leaves and rubbed them on skin to keep biting insects away. Our Bug Gone spray uses the same natural power against mozzies, midges and ticks.
How do I use the Botanical Cleaner?
Use it like any multi-surface spray on kitchens, bathrooms, benchtops, floors and mould-prone areas. It cleans with lemon myrtle's natural antimicrobial action instead of toxic chemicals, so there are no harsh fumes and it's safe around family and waterways. Available in 500ml, 2.5L and 20L refill sizes.
